Callis, Smith

Born in 1709, Smith was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1731, he gained his Captaincy in 1742 with the command of HMS Duke and was involved with that vessel at the attack of St Tropez. Later in 1742 he was Captain of HMS Assistance, a command which he held until 1747 when he was transferred to HMS Oxford. He was Captain of HMS Culloden from 1756, taking part in the Battle of Lagos Bay in 1759. In the same year he was promoted to Rear-Admiral of the Blue, and as Flag Officer on board HMS Culloden in 1760.
