Shirley, George James

George was the son of Captain Jas Shirley who died in 1777, together with all on board, in command of the Vestal frigate on the banks of Newfoundland. He joined the Royal Navy in 1779 as an able seaman, at the age of ten. In 1790 he gained his commission as a Lieutenant and was on board the Royal George during the mutiny at Spithead in 1797. In the same year, he was transferred to the Fire Vessel Maegaera, and then on to HMS Mars, a vessel of 74 guns in 1798. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1825 and to Vice Admiral in 1840.
