Waller, Jane

Jane was the only daughter and heiress of Sir Richard Reynell, a prosperous family from Forde, near Wolborough in Devon. She married Sir William Waller on 12th August 1622 as his first wife and died in childbirth in 1633. This tomb was designed for both Sir William Waller and his wife Jane. Sir William was a leading general on the Parliamentary side during the Civil War of 1642 to 1646. He lost Bath to the Royalists at the Battle of Lansdown in 1643 and some of the Royalist soldiers who were garrisoned in Bath vented their feelings against him by battering the face of his effigy and by removing the hand of his sword arm at the wrist. Sir William, who married another two times, died in 1668 and is buried in Tothill Street Chapel, in Westminster.
